A Blast From the Past

SN’s girls, and even Madeline, have been fascinated with watching Little House on the Prairie.  We’ve been renting the DVD’s from the library and slowly getting through Season 1.  I used to love this show as a kid, and even though watching it now has made me realize how silly and historically inaccurate the show is, it’s still a fabulous series for kids… literally filled to the brim with great life lessons. We’ve only gotten through the first 9 episodes and already we’ve had some wonderful discussions about stuff… such as how we should never change or compromise ourselves in order to get along with other people, how integrity is paramount in establishing relationships, etc. etc.  This show sure beats most crap on tv and dvd these days. Bratz? Hannah Montana?  Seriously. What are those shows teaching young girls? Ugh..  don’t even want to think about that trash.  Garbage in, garbage out, right?

  1. I’m not ashamed to admit I still watch the show.  I’m so glad the girls enjoy it.  Mo and I watch the show together when she stays here and she loves it!

  2. When I lived in Minnesota I trekked out to Walnut Grove and bought the first book.  Walnut Grove was where they lived in a DUG OUT.  Yeah, think beaver hole.  Seriously.

Definitely soak in the tv show and when they get through it move to the books.  Laura does a beautiful job illustrating life back then - travelling a whole day just to get to the general store, saving a whole year to buy a rag doll - the corn harvesting machine that every man in a 50-mile-radius seemed to share.

Both media offer wonderful life lessons!!!!

  3. I got addicted to watching LHP just a couple of years ago. I have seen just about every episode now thanks to PBS rerunning it. I agree its a great show for young kids. Girls have no role models these days.
