Popular Names

Before the hubs and I ever married (over 10 years ago) we had our kid names picked out. (Note the plural on names!) Anyhoo, we always knew if we had a girl, we'd name her Madeline Elizabeth after her two grandmothers. We had another girl's name picked out and two boy's names picked out as well. (Not that we were ever planning to have 4 kids... just prepping in case we had twins or something...). Anyhoo, we prided ourselves on having really original names, but it seems that over the years our names have become really trendy and over-used, which turns us off completely. Madeline is one of those trendy names now too. Everywhere I go, I see the preppy Mom in her preppy car calling her preppy little girl Madeline or Maddie!! Eeeeew. And nearly every parenting magazine I pick up, there's an article about a little girl named Madeline (mostly featuring little Madeline's who are bad!!) Ironic, eh? Anyhoo, it just sickens me to know our girl has a trendy name. Thank goodness we have an out with the grandma thing.

What happened to originality? I have to give Gwnyth Paltrow and her hubs (whoever he is) props for naming their kid "Apple". Is it weird? Yes. But at least it's different. Well it was then. Now there's probably lots of dorky families all over the place calling their baby girls Apple, Peach, Cucumber or some other silly fruit or vegetable. People are weird.

I love Madeline! I think of it as classic more then anything, but I hear you on the trendy names. A's name is Avery and now it's a top 100 GIRLS name. My poor kid. At least he is still in denial over the whole girls aren't named avery.

Mind you my kids names are not original but at least the are NAMES of PEOPLE. LMAO, now if a regular person were to name their kid Apple, the poor thing would get teased their whole lives.

And JL - I LOVE B Beaux name. That was on the list for B.

My two older boys have very common names but Baby B, he's Braeden...I love the name, love the spelling and I too am starting to hear it more and more. It wasn't easy deciding what to name him, but we're happy with our choice. :-)
I always had girls names picked out too, never got to use one of them though! ;-)

Oh i KNOW... isn't it frustrating? Our girl name was also Madeline Elizabeth... Madeline after my great grandmother, Elizabeth after my grandmother and my husband's mother. I thought it was so beautiful (still do). I knew there were a ton of MADISON's and thus, a lot of Maddies out there, but who knew Madeline was so freakin' popular? Ugh.. and the way some people just SCREW with the spelling... ew ew ew. I even saw a "Matalyn" on a message board somewhere. Gag. If you're going to choose a classic name, don't bastardize it!

I'm so annoyed at how much it's used, especially since I wasn't choosing it because it was an "in" name (didn't even think it was)... I'm SO annoyed that I even though I love the name more than any other girl's name I can come up with, I probably won't use it if we have a little girl the next time around. :( We're tossing around Genevieve (after my husband's grandmother) and Caroline just because I've always liked that name. (not as much as Madeline.

Oh and to the person who commented about "Avery" for a boy. That's also one of my boy name favorites... it was the name of the little boy in Charlotte's Web and I have ALWAYS loved it.

I'm afraid to use it for the reason you just mentioned... argh. The general public is always ruining my good baby names with their stupid ideas about what's cool!!! ;)

Well, I guess we are one of the "trendy ones" too. We are pretty much set on naming our little girl Madeline. We just love the name, even if it is popular.....=( That's why I enjoy it here so much....a great little girl with a great name!

Erin, I still can't get over the fact that had you given birth to a little girl, she'd be Madeline Elizabeth also - after grandmothers (just like Mo)! That's such a coincidence!!

As an unusual namer of children even I was astounded by the name Apple. But now I think it's adorable! (Guess it grew on me!LOL!)
Your girl couldn't be anything other than a Madeline. Best site I found was the American Social Security names lists. it does most popular names by year. My Gram and her Sister's names were all tops of the lists around 1913...Go figure!

My niece is Madelynn Grace named for my Great grandmother with the same name even spelled the same way. I do agree it is trendy though. My sister calls her Maddie, and I love that. But so many Madison's.
Gavin is WAYYYY popular now. There are 3 including him in our playgroup. But oh well. I love the name and I can't imagine him being anything but a Gavin. With this baby we have a very popular boysname picked out and a very unique girls name. We'll see what happens.
