ADD - Attention Decorating Disorder

I have this problem with boredom in relation to my decor. As I'm writing this, I'm looking around the family room and thinking about all the things I'd like to change. And the sad thing is even if I changed it, I'd be bored with it in another couple of years.

Anyhoo, the hubs and I have been working on the floor plans for our kitchen makeover. After 8 months of working on this project, we're now getting ready to sign the papers. And I'm afraid to do it. I think the cost is scaring me. The whole project is about $32,000 in total and if we spend that kind of money on this one project, we'll never have money to do anything else. In other words, I have to live in this family room for a couple of years even though I hate the way it looks. And I have to live with a hideous bathroom, and another room with ugly wallpaper...etc. I think you get the idea.

Financially speaking, does $32k for a kitchen remodel sound expensive? We have a relatively small kitchen - it's not even big enough to be considered eat-in. Yet the cabinets alone are costing nearly $16,000. Granted, everything is being custom made because we're picky as hell. But still, that seems like a big chunk of change for some freakin' wood cabinets.

Sounds like I'm trying to talk myself out of this. Gah. I hate decisions.

That does sound like a lot of money but we would be the same way as there are so many custom items we want for the kitchen.

When spending a large amount of money on one project, I always ask myself a - "Is this worth it and will it add value" and b - "Could I do a lot of little projects with the money and be happier instead of spending it on one big project".

I wish you luck in you decision. Anxious to see how it turns out!

Yes! That is way to much I would say. My parents just redid their entire kitchen. New cupboards, new tile floor, new counter tops, stregthening all the bases underneath the kitchen as well and they got away with $10,000. Sounds like a lot. Just be sure that you are able to get a return on investment if you ever sell your house. Just a thought. Could you add on $32,000 to your selling price because of your remodel? You can come do my kitchen anytime. Hee:)

Depends. Are you planning to stay in this house or sell it eventually? We live in a townhouse, which obviously, after another baby we will be growing out of rapidly... but I'd still like to redo our kitchen for resale purposes (it's the first room you see when you walk in the house). To keep it in budget, we're looking at cabinet refacing instead of new cabinets... the biggest expenses will be the new oven/new sink/new counters. (of COURSE I want Corian... GAH! $$$)

There is an equation they say to go by...like the kitchen remodel should be 10% of the total house value... I will hunt for that!
