NORMAL PARENT OR PARANOID FREAK? YOU DECIDE!

Ever since Mo came along, I've been thinking a lot about preparing a will. In fact, I've already been in contact with an attorney and am working on the lengthy, grueling process. The strange thing is that I never even gave a second thought to having a will pre-Mo, but for some reason I have this sudden fear of death. I know...it sounds crazy.

A friend of mine said that once she had kids, she became paranoid about things. For instance, whenever she and her husband are traveling anywhere together, they take separate airplanes in case something happens. She said every decision they make centers around making sure their kids have at least one parent should something tragic occur. Sounds a bit paranoid to me, but in some ways, I can understand where she's coming from.

As for my sudden fear of death, I think it's been exacerbated lately by some things that have happened around me. First, my boss's sister-in-law died suddenly of an aneurysm and she was only in her early thirties. Then her husband died a few weeks later. And yesterday we found out that a neighbor (several houses down from us) suddenly died on Saturday in his house from a heart attack - and he was 32 and perfectly healthy. Three people in their earlier thirties died in a matter of a few months. What's going on?

I know I can't control what happens. When God says my time is up, it's up. I also know there's no point in dwelling on this fear, yet why can't I seem to get over this weird feeling? Is this a normal new parent thing? Or am I a paranoid freak?

The exact same thing happened to me after I had children. I thought as they got older it would lessen but NO. A will is definitely in order. My big struggle was who to make guardian if something happened to both of us.

I am the SAME way. I flew to NYC shortly after babybeaux and thought I could never fly again. I still have not braved it. I just want to see my kids grow up and I want them to know me as well. It makes me a freak!
I don't know what state you live in, but I can not emphasize enough the need for a will. Ie: in my state if a parent dies intestate (without a will) everything is split between the surviving child and the parent. That creates mucho problems. Also, life insurance. These are things that NEED to be done. :)

Having a child changes everything! Of course, you can't live in fear, but it's good to be prepared to take care of your family just in case of a tragedy.

Natural totally natural. The key is what you do with that fear. Use it to move forward don't let it paralyze you.

We have upped ours since having kids (then again when we started to have kids we didn't really have good payin jobs). But now we don't have a will but it is something that we have been wanting to do for a while! You never know when something will happen. A friend is a insurance agent and she always hears "he was only 30 and had 4 kids with no life insurance".

I don't think you are being paranoid at all! I have seen so many ugly situations where a will would have solve so much. I agree with Fin(?) Our biggest dilemma is who to state as guardian as well. I am glad to read your post, hopefully it will get the hubs and myself talking!
