MORE BIRTHDAY CENTRAL

Mo's birthday is around the corner. It's so hard to believe that almost a year has gone by. I don't even like thinking about it...part of me just wants to pretend it isn't happening. But alas, with birthday around the corner comes party around the corner! It's time to start the planning.

I'm not good at kiddie party planning. And thankfully, there's no need to go overboard with the first birthday. Let's face it...she won't even remember the thing! Actually, I don't see the need to ever go overboard on any birthday party...mainly because I'm practical to a fault! And I don't want my child to be spoiled rotten. Although sometimes I wonder if I go "overboard" in the "trying so hard not to spoil her" thoughts that I'll end up neglecting her of certain milestone events. Somehow I need to find that balance. I guess I really struggle in this area, in particular, because I've had the - ahem - "pleasure" of meeting some very spoiled, self-centered, demanding and downright disrespectful kids over the years that it has scared the crap out of me. In other words, I'm forever tainted by my experiences and now have this obsessive desire to do everything in my power to prevent my child from developing any of those qualities.

Well enough rambling. Sometimes I drive myself crazy with my analytical ways!!

So, I wonder.... Do we throw a birthday bash? Or do we have a low key get together with close family and friends? I always envisioned the latter, but lately I'm feeling like I want to really, really celebrate this amazing first year of her life. She doesn't need gifts or anything like that. I just want her to be surrounded by people who love her and want to celebrate her being part of our lives.

If anyone has any thoughts, please share!

We always invited all the fam and friends over for the kids parties (except for now when they become overthrown with 6-7-8-9 yr old and there is just no room. We now invite them over at a different time). When they were younger we lived in a apartment with a pool and they all enjoyed that. Maybe have a big shin dig at the park if possible? That would be cool - kids can play and adults can chit chat. You can still have a big shin dig and have it be cheap but perfect!

For both of the boys 1st birthdays it was just family and friends. You're right, they don't remember it and sometimes get overwhelmed by all the people, noise, presents, etc. We made sure the birthday boy had a special cake to dig in and get all nice and messy!

After the first birthday we celebrate the milestones, 5,10,13,16,18 and after that who knows!

gift boxes filled with wrapping paper and ribbons.... and make Mo her own birthday cake.

That's all you need for the party.... except people to be entertained by her "opening" these items.... especially the cake!

Ya know, I feel the same way... Ben won't remember it... it's a major inconvenience for a lot of family, all of whom have to come back to town four or five more times over the next few months for two graduations, a wedding shower, a baby shower and a wedding. Plus, our month is PACKED as it is. This is not to say my child's first birthday should take a backseat to anything, it's just that, all the chaos of a huge party is just not necessary. We are doing two small parties with immediate family only. One we are even combining with Easter dinner...

I think maybe next year I'll make a bigger deal.. but for this year, quiet and simple is where it's at. :)
